Government Bodies
WindNI are currently developing their own series of wind power iniatives but also facilitate this process for other parties by providing all the services necessary to get a wind power development completed; from preliminary site analysis to obtaining planning permission and finally to turbine erection.
We would encourage all Government bodies to closely examine the potential for production of renewable energy on their property. By implementing innovative energy solutions, such as wind power production on their sites, councils will be leading by example and showing their commitment to combating climate change and reducing their carbon footprint. It would also demonstrate;
• Good use of council owned land in providing a meaningful contribution to its electricity consumption.
• Active promotion of a renewable energy future.
• Possible ‘flagship’ developments eg. In public parks, the zoo, etc.
• An opportunity to increase public awareness of the benefits of environmental sustainability by using these iniatives as a basis for educational programmes in schools and community groups.
• A good project for the local area generating green energy in an industrialised setting.
Our province is one of the windiest areas in Europe. However, it currently produces just 8% of its electricity using renewable resources. The Government wants to see this figure rise to 40% by 2020. As a result, there will be guaranteed long-term, continuous investment in the wind sector to ensure it meets its targets set by the European Commission. This long-term government commitment guarantees wind power as a sound long term investment.
