Breeding Bird Survey

Breeding Bird Survey

A bird survey will usually be requested on a proposed site if it is believed that a protected bird species or bird species of conservation concern uses the site. The duration and scale of such a survey will vary depending on the size and number of proposed turbines and the species and habitat involved.

Wind NI will consult with the Northern Ireland Environment Agency on your behalf to determine what survey work is required in advance of any such study. Wind NI will ensure all bird surveys are carried out in accordance with Scottish Natural Heritage guidelines, as advised by Northern Ireland Environment Agency.

The bird survey will provide information on the type and number of birds that may be displaced by the wind development and the extent and importance to the bird populations of the area from which they may be displaced (whether through disturbance or habitat loss).  Levels of flight activity and types of flight behaviour will also be provided to help assess collision risk.

In addition to a bird survey, Wind NI will assess the level of impact on bird populations arising from associated habitat loss, displacement and collision risk.  Wind NI will advise on mitigation measures to reduce the impact of wind turbines to birds.

Wind NI can provide both pre- and post-construction bird monitoring if required.
